Welcome to Caravelle's WATCHER products! Implementing an effective network information and management system that improves the reliability, performance and effectiveness of private and public networks has never been easier or more cost-effective.
The WATCHER products are second generation network management solutions designed to put you back in control of your LAN or WAN environment. WATCHER monitors your network on a continuous basis. WATCHER alerts you to problems before they become a crisis, via:
ï your Macintosh screen;
ï synthesized or recorded voice messages;
ï pocket pagers;
ï modem connections to other computers;
ï electronic mail; or
ï AppleScript (You may want to refer to Apple's Macintosh User's Guide for more information.)
If you want to know the status of your network, anytime, anywhere, WATCHER is the perfect solution for you.
WATCHER can also escalate notifications to help you make sure a problem is cleared. You can choose to receive a series of followup messages if a device failure persists.
Please note that you will have different combinations of the features discussed in this documentation, depending on the particular WATCHER product youíve purchased. If you would like more features than your version of WATCHER currently has, please contact Caravelle or your local distributor for more information.
WATCHER supports simple network management protocol (SNMP), and can provide you with enhanced reporting for SNMP-compliant AppleTalk and Internet network devices.
WATCHER can report on the status of bridges, modems, routers, printers, computers, and other networked devices. It can also report on network services, such as electronic mail and file servers, and is compatible with all network cabling schemes. It can even operate across remote links.
WATCHER often identifies device problems before users are even aware that one exists. WATCHER gives you the flexibility to detect, notify and follow up on any device problem in your network.
WATCHER monitors all devices in the following network environments:
ï AppleTalk
ï Internet
ï DECnet
ï Novell IPX
WATCHER monitors any registered devices on your AppleTalk network over multiple zones. It scans the AppleTalk network to provide you with a list of all the devices in the available zones.
In many situations, you might want to know more about a device than just whether it is up or down. You may need more specific information about a device problem or status. WATCHER provides you with enhanced testing of many AppleTalk devices. You can use specialized test modules for different devices in your network. WATCHER uses these test modules to provide you with detailed reports. (For example, you might want to be warned of paper jams on a laser printer, or disk space shortage on a server).
WATCHER can provide customizable enhanced monitoring of AppleTalk and Internet devices that support simple network management protocol (SNMP). It provides a library containing MIB1, MIB2, and some private SNMP MIB definitions that you can use to monitor SNMP devices on your network. You can also create your own definitions.
Managers and administrators of Novell NetWare networks can use WATCHER to automatically detect hardware devices connected to a network using the IPX protocol. These devices include essential network elements such as file servers, application servers (such as fax and mail servers), printers, and workstations.
Using NetWareís Bindery Services (version 2.x, 3.x server O/S) and NetWare's Directory Services (version 4.x servers), WATCHER can automatically discover and test devices connected to any Novell NetWare file server. This feature includes the new breed of NEST (NetWare Embedded System Technology) devices where NDS is supported.
What is the purpose of a virtual marketplace if the doors are shut and locked when the shoppers want to shop? WATCHER is designed to track the availability and performance of critical Internet Server devices. WATCHER automatically detects and monitors all devices in a TCP/IP network. For Internet Servers, WATCHER finds and identifies appropriate applications and tests the server functionality.
Not only does WATCHER monitor your Web server, but it can also watch the number of hits your Web site receives. You can also test whether a specific Web page is available. WATCHER monitors each Web page individually. Scripts allow you to connect to the Web server and exchange information with it.
When a manager needs to watch absolutely everything, WATCHER can combine all its different features into one powerful network status information system. Failed file server? Web server not responding? Printer queues filling up? Router port failure? Network Interface Card failure on a critical application server? Is the problem local to you or on the other side of the planet? No problem. WATCHER tells you about it before the phone starts to ring off the hook.
In addition to this printed documentation, the WATCHER products include an extensive online help reference guide and tutorial. While youíre using WATCHER, you can access these online information modules using the Help commands.
In addition, most dialogs include a Help button. You can click this button to display information about the dialog from within WATCHER. You can also press the F1 key to display this context-sensitive help information.
